Summary

Persona 2: Innocent Sin (often just called Innocent Sin, and released abroad as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2: Innocent Sin) drops you into Sumaru City, where a band of Seven Sisters High School students discover they can summon Personas—manifestations of their inner selves. The game’s turn‑based combat lets you mix melee attacks, items, and Persona‑based spells, even fusing spells for extra punch, while a quirky Rumor system lets you spread gossip through the in‑game detective agency to reshape the city’s reality. The story pits the crew, led by Tatsuya Suou, against a mysterious Joker whose rumors turn into dangerous phenomena, echoing the game’s theme that words (Kotodama) can literally alter the world. Development stayed tight to the original team, with veteran producer Kouji Okada, designer Kazuma Kaneko, and writer Tadashi Satomi steering the sequel, and character art contributed by Kaneko and Shigenori Soejima. Though the PlayStation launch never saw a western release, the later PSP port finally let English‑speaking fans experience its blend of teenage angst and supernatural intrigue.

Storyline

Persona 2: Innocent Sin takes place in 1999 in the seaside city of Sumaru, Japan. The main cast consists of students from Seven Sisters and Kasugayama High Schools—Tatsuya Suou, Lisa “Ginko” Silverman, Eikichi “Michel” Mishina, Maya Amano, Yukino “Yuki” Mayuzumi, and later Jun Kurosu. They soon discover that rumors are turning into reality, a warning delivered by the enigmatic Philemon.

A mysterious figure called Joker summons a crystal skull that drains Ideal Energy, prompting the group to confront the cult‑like Masked Circle. Its leaders—King Leo (Tatsuya Sudou), Prince Taurus (Ginji Sasaki), and Lady Scorpio (Anna Yoshizaka)—are gathering Ideal Energy, while the heroes learn they were once members of the Circle ten years prior. Maya was sealed in Alaya Shrine, Sudou set it ablaze, and Jun, manipulated by Nyarlathotep, became Joker to punish his former friends.

After battling the Circle, a rumor‑generated Nazi battalion, and the Ideal Father, the party collects five elemental crystal skulls, faces their Shadow Selves, and stops the Oracle’s fulfillment. Maya is fatally wounded, the world is reduced to a floating Sumaru, and the friends erase the day they first met, sacrificing their shared memories. In the new timeline, they cross paths at a train station, with Tatsuya bumping into Maya, hinting at lives improved but friendship forgotten.
