Summary
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment drops you into the bustling fictional city of Sumaru, where rumors have started materializing as reality under the mysterious Joker Curse. I follow reporter Maya Amano as she uncovers the strange phenomenon, and the party soon gains the power to summon Personas—manifestations of their inner selves. The turn‑based battles feel smooth, while the Rumor system lets you spread gossip that can tip events toward good or chaos, adding a mischievous layer of strategy.
The game refines the mechanics of its predecessor, reusing assets while overhauling the Rumor engine and polishing the combat flow. Veteran staff like producer Kouji Okada, artist Kazuma Kaneko and composers Toshiko Tasaki, Kenichi Tsuchiya and Masaki Kurokawa return, and British singer Elisha La’Verne contributed the optimistic theme song “Change Your Way.” Critics gave it scores in the low 80s on both Metacritic and GameRankings, praising the improvements and localization, and it topped Japanese charts with over 200 000 copies sold. A PSP remake appeared in 2012 only in Japan, but the original PS1 version’s digital release in 2013 helped revive the series’ modest presence in the West.
Storyline
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is set in 1999 in Sumaru, a fictional seaside city of 1.28 million residents that still contains Warring States‑era structures. The story follows Maya Amano, a teen‑magazine reporter who also appeared in Innocent Sin, and her allies from the two local high schools: Tatsuya Suou, Ulala Serizawa, former prosecutor Baofu and police sergeant Katsuya Suou. Returning enemies include the Joker‑master Tatsuya Sudou, his father Tatsuzou Sudou, and the resurrected Takahisa Kandori, a former servant of Nyarlathotep. All can summon Personas, gifts granted by Philemon.
The opening case has Maya investigating the Joker legend—a caller who kills anyone who dials their own number. At Seven Sisters the principal is found dead, forcing Maya, Ulala and Katsuya to summon their Personas. Philemon warns of a larger threat, and the team learns Sudou himself is the Joker, trying to bring back the “Other Side.” They recruit Baofu and, depending on choices, either Kei Nanjō or Eriko Kirishima to confront the spreading Kegare that creates new Jokers.
Tatsuzou’s New World Order intends to raise Sumaru on the rumor‑driven ship Torifune and summon sacred dragons. After the party defeats Tatsuzou and Nyarlathotep, the city returns to normal and Maya watches Tatsuya vanish.
