Summary

Pepsiman is a PlayStation endless‑runner that puts the soda brand’s blue‑capped hero on an automatically scrolling runway, forcing players to dash, jump, and dodge a parade of quirky obstacles. The game’s core loop feels like a primitive Crash Bandicoot level, but with a relentless forward push that presaged modern runner titles.

KID built the title on a shoestring budget, stitching together low‑cost 2D cutscenes and a handful of 3D moments illustrated by future visual‑novel writer Kotaro Uchikoshi. Although it launched only in Japan in March 1999, the audio is fully English with Japanese subtitles, making the experience oddly international.

Critics were split—some praised its goofy charm while others derided the simplistic design—yet the title has since become a cult favorite. It’s often cited as an early influence on games like Temple Run, appeared in a 2019 Angry Video Game Nerd episode, earned a vinyl soundtrack release in 2020, and remains a regular fixture in Games Done Quick speed‑run marathons.

Storyline

Pepsiman’s fictional backstory says he was a scientist who turned into a superhero after exposure to the mysterious “Holy Pepsi.” In the PlayStation title Pepsiman, he races across a stylized America to hand out soda to thirsty citizens.

The game is divided into four stages – San Francisco, New York City, Texas, and Pepsi City – each ending with a chase by a gigantic object such as a massive Pepsi can. Along the way he dodges cars, construction equipment, pedestrians and Pepsi‑branded trucks, and sometimes faces odd gimmicks like a steel garbage can that flips the controls or a skateboard segment.

Between runs, cut‑scene videos show a stereotypical American man, played by Canadian actor Mike Butters, guzzling Pepsi while munching chips and pizza as he watches Pepsiman on TV.
