Summary
Nightmare Creatures II thrusts players into the boots of Herbert Wallace, an escaped lab test subject hunting the mad Dr. Adam Crowley across fog‑shrouded London and Paris. Unlike its predecessor, Herbert is the sole playable character and the monster‑swap mechanic is gone, but the game adds gritty fatality moves for dispatching weakened foes. The PlayStation edition stands out for its soundtrack, pairing Frédéric Motte’s original score with licensed tracks from Rob Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe and American Made Music to Strip By, underscoring the gore‑splattered set‑pieces. Critical response was mixed: GamePro praised its “sharp‑looking and –sounding” action while warning of the ultra‑mature, blood‑soaked visuals, and The Electric Playground offered a favorable preview during development. The Dreamcast port, however, struggled with unfavorable reviews, cementing the PlayStation version as the more memorable experience for horror fans.
Storyline
Nightmare Creatures II (also called Nightmare Creatures 2) opens in 1934, a century after the first game. Occultist Adam Crowley has created an army of mutant beasts to wipe out the Circle, a group of monster hunters. Herbert Wallace, a patient from Crowley’s genetics hospital, escapes with an axe and reaches London. He finds a photo of Ignatius Blackward and Nadia Franciscus, the heroes who previously defeated Crowley. With Rachel, the only surviving Circle member, Wallace is rescued from a fire.
After parting ways, Wallace heads for Crowley’s castle, only to learn the villain has fled to Paris. A fall down a chute drops him onto a biplane, which he pilots across the Channel. In France he finds a cinema note from Rachel warning him of Crowley’s plans, then a museum where she has been captured by zombies. Inside the museum Wallace uncovers a blueprint of the Eiffel Tower and cult documents.
Following the clues, Wallace descends into the Paris sewers and emerges beneath the Eiffel Tower. He climbs to the summit, confronts a monstrosity and detonates it with dynamite. The blast hurls him off the spire, but he lands and reunites with Rachel. Together they walk away, leaving Crowley’s fate ambiguous.
