Summary
Playing Monster Rancher 2 on the PlayStation felt like tending a secret garden of strange beasts, especially after the game finally hit PAL territories as the series’ debut there. The quirky trainer’s assistant Colt and her loud‑mouthed toucan Joy do all the talking, so I’m constantly choosing menu options for everything from feeding to battling. Tournaments pop up all year, but the real bragging rights come from the four IMa Official Cups—win one and your monsters rank up, unlocking tougher contests. The combat’s simple‑yet‑strategic: each move burns a little “guts” that refills over time, and placement matters, with close‑range hits even pushing opponents back. New monster types arrive via plot events, expeditions or errantry, usually as items that later let any CD generate those creatures. The mix of breeding, training, and quirky presentation kept me coming back for more.
Storyline
Monster Rancher 2 lets you raise, breed, and battle monsters, but the player never sees the trainer on screen. All dialogue is handled by the assistant Colt and her toucan Joy, while you issue commands through menu selections. The story starts when you register as a trainer and Colt appears as your official helper, and events unfold only after you meet conditions such as winning battles or reaching a rank.
The game’s timeline runs parallel to the original Monster Rancher, taking place on the IMa continent instead of FIMBA. Every four years a special IMa vs. FIMBA meet occurs in the last week of August, after you win the entry tournament in July, letting your monster face Holly’s assistant from the first game. Defeating the four highest‑ranked “Big Four” battles triggers a video on monster history, and a monster that clears all S‑class tournaments can enter a champion‑only match.
Finishing the Major 4 and Legend Cup doesn’t automatically unlock every breed; each main monster requires its own set of unlocking steps.
