Summary
Legend of Legaia still surprises me with its hybrid fighting‑game combat on the original PlayStation. Instead of simple turn‑based attacks, you program a sequence of moves—Left, Right or Arms—and watch the characters unleash chainable Arts, some of which require special Books to become Hyper Arts. Capturing and leveling a Ra‑Seru adds its own attack slot, letting you swap weapons for increasingly powerful summons. The 3D world was ambitious for its time, built on full‑polygon models and a wide range of enemy animations that react realistically. Critics praised this system, giving the game around 77 % on GameRankings and a nomination for the AIAS Console Adventure/Role‑Playing Game of the Year award. Sales eventually topped 300,000 units, proving that the gamble on a tactical combat engine paid off for many retro fans.
Storyline
Legend of Legaia takes place in the world of Legaia, where humans coexist with magical beings called Seru. Ten years before the story begins a mysterious Mist spreads, driving Seru mad and turning them into monsters that nearly collapse civilization. The quiet youth Vahn, the feral child Noa, and the monk‑warrior Gala set out to revive ten Genesis Trees, using rare Ra‑Seru that are immune to the Mist, in order to push the fog back and destroy the Mist Generators that create it.
Their journey spans three continents; they repeatedly awaken Genesis Trees, defeat the Mist Generators, and clash with Gala’s rival Songi, who has merged with a Seru and is mutating into a monster. In the ruined city of Conkram they travel back in time, learn that Prince Cort—Noa’s brother—engineered the Mist as a biological weapon, and return to the present to destroy the final generator and defeat Cort.
The heroes return to Vahn’s hometown of Rim Elm, only to face Songi and the gigantic Seru Juggernaut that devours the village. After defeating Songi they enter Juggernaut, defeat the fused Cort, and the monster collapses, allowing the world to be restored and the newborn Cort to be cared for by Noa.
