Summary
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (often just called Soul Reaver) drops you into a hauntingly gothic world where the key to progress is the ability to shift between the material and spectral planes. In the physical realm you can swing Raziel’s claws, lift and throw blocks, and battle flesh‑and‑blood foes, while the spectral side lets you glide through gates and walk on water—though you can’t manipulate objects there. This dual‑realm design fuels puzzles that demand you to watch how platforms and switches transform as you hop between dimensions, and it also fuels a combat loop where each enemy type—humans, spectral creatures, or vampires—requires a different approach.
Combat is a hack‑and‑slash system that rewards combos and finishing moves, and the iconic Soul Reaver sword not only stops health degeneration but can be lost the instant you take damage, forcing you to restore full health before reclaiming it. As you defeat clan brothers you inherit new powers, from wall‑climbing to telekinetic bolts, and glyph altars let you unlock elemental attacks that exploit vampire weaknesses like sunlight, fire, and water.
The team built the game on an upgraded Gex 3 engine, adding streaming tech to keep load times low, and they aimed for a Tomb Raider‑style adventure feel. Voice work from Michael Bell, Simon Templeman, and Tony Jay earned particular praise, and critics highlighted the PlayStation’s graphics as some of the best ever seen on the console. Despite complaints about the save and map systems, the title snagged a nomination for Console Adventure/Role‑Playing Game of the Year from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.
Storyline
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver takes place roughly 1,500 years after the events of Blood Omen, in the crumbling world of Nosgoth. The land’s health is tied to nine Pillars, each guarded by a spirit, but the guardians have become corrupt and eight were slain by Kain, who refused to sacrifice himself to restore them. With the Pillars failing, Nosgoth teeters on the brink of decay, its vampires ruling over a decimated human population while the Elder God watches from beneath, controlling the Wheel of Fate.
The game follows Raziel, once Kain’s most trusted lieutenant, who is betrayed and cast into the Lake of the Dead. The Elder God resurrects him as a wraith and names him the "soul reaver," tasking him with avenging Kain’s betrayal. Along the way Raziel defeats his former brothers—Melchiah, Zephon, Rahab, and Dumah—absorbing their souls and gaining new abilities such as wall‑climbing, swimming, and spectral sight, while Ariel, the former guardian of Balance, offers cryptic guidance.
After confronting Kain at the ruined Pillars, Raziel shatters Kain’s Soul Reaver sword and claims its spectral form. The battle moves to the Chronoplast, a time‑machine hidden in an ancient cathedral; Kain escapes through a temporal portal, and Raziel follows, emerging into a scene that leads directly into the events of Soul Reaver 2.
