Summary
King's Field II surprised me when I picked it up on the original PlayStation. The English version is actually a repackaged Japanese release titled King's Field III, renamed for North America since the true first entry never made it overseas. The game throws you into a fully three‑dimensional, non‑linear world that feels massive enough to lose track of time – a point many reviewers highlighted as the biggest selling point. Exploration is pure first‑person, with teleports letting you jump between sprawling cities on the map screen, while puzzles and dungeon delves reward patience. Combat and movement are deliberately sluggish, a design choice that divided critics; some praised the atmospheric tension it created, others called the pacing tedious. Despite that, the sheer scope keeps you engrossed for months, especially when you stumble upon hidden corridors and sprawling landscapes beyond the above‑ground stretches. It's a quirky slice of early 90s RPG history that still feels distinct today.
Storyline
King's Field II drops you into a bleak fantasy world where the kingdom is besieged by the ruthless minions of an ancient evil. The dark forces have even possessed King Alfred, forcing his own son, Prince Lyle, to rise as the only hope. As a Verdite prince, Lyle must uncover why his father, Jean, has suddenly slipped into madness while battling the corrupted monarch. The quest drives him across cursed ruins and forgotten temples, seeking the truth behind the madness and the means to free his father and kingdom. Ultimately, Lyle’s actions will shape the fate of the world, bringing a tide of change that echoes through time.
