Summary

Kensei: Sacred Fist (sometimes just called Kensei) is a PlayStation‑only 3D fighter that never made it to the arcade floor. It arrived late in the ’90s and even got a budget reissue in 2001, which is how many collectors discover it today.

What really sets it apart is the four‑button layout – punch, kick, throw and a guard that works more like a dodge. The guard lets you sidestep or bounce back, but timing is king; mis‑timed throws leave you vulnerable, so frantic button‑mashing rarely pays off. Movement feels weighty, jumps are realistic, and sidesteps crawl unless a character has a built‑in special slide.

The roster starts with nine world‑spanning fighters, and a secret trove of fourteen alternate warriors can be unlocked by clearing the arcade‑style ladder. Finish the roster and a quirky “racing” mini‑game appears, where you sprint through a circuit by hammering buttons for speed. It’s a quirky glimpse of how Konami tried to stretch replay value beyond ordinary matches.

Storyline

Kensei: Sacred Fist drops players into a gritty arcade‑style beat‑’em‑up where each of the twelve fighters pursues a personal vendetta. Yugo Sangunji, a karateka from Japan, leaves home to test his strength after his father’s murder, while his brother Akira awaits as the sub‑boss on the ninth stage. Hong Yuli fights to avenge her parents with Drunken Fist, confronting master Su Qingtao before moving on.
The game’s ladder spans eleven stages: the first eight toss random opponents, the ninth pits the player against a themed sub‑boss, the tenth pits the crime lord Zhou Leimeng, and the final showdown is against his bodyguard Kaiya Tsubaki. All characters eventually cross paths with other rivals such as Douglas Anderson seeking revenge for his partner, or Allen surviving a brutal Muay‑Thai childhood.
Beyond the core Survival, Training and Time Attack modes, unlocking every fighter reveals a quirky racing mini‑game where button‑mashing fuels a sprint around a circuit.
