Summary

Hogs of War throws you into a turn‑based battlefield where anthropomorphic pigs fight for parody versions of Great Britain, Russia, Germany, Japan, France and the USA. Each turn you control a single hog in a third‑person view, hopping over hills, swimming through hazardous water and even piloting a tank or turret when the class allows it. The game’s cheeky humor, delivered by the late British comic Rik Mayall, turns every explosion into a punch‑line, complete with a goofy remark before a hog blows up.

You can outfit your squad with any of the 40 weapons on offer – from sniper rifles and bazookas to jet‑packs, cluster grenades and mines – and promote your grunt to officer across four distinct classes: Heavy Weapons, Medic, Espionage, and Engineer. Hazards like water‑damage, mines and the ever‑looming possibility of falling off the map keep each turn tense, while a timer forces you to act before the clock runs out. A character isn’t truly gone until it’s died three times, adding a semi‑permadeath twist to the chaos.

The single‑player campaign spans 25 levels, and an online mode lets up to four players duke it out with the same arsenal. The blend of strategic positioning and over‑the‑top weaponry makes each match feel both tactical and wildly unpredictable.

Development began in 1997 under Gremlin Interactive before Infogrames took over, and the project survived a near‑cancellation thanks to extra development time. Though it never got a sequel, the title earned a cult following, inspired board and card spin‑offs, and a remaster is currently in the works.

Storyline

In Hogs of War, an untapped supply of swill has been discovered on the uninhabited archipelago of Saustralasia in the South Pigsific Ocean, and every Hog Nation races to claim it. The swill, described as the lifeblood of pigs, fuels an all‑out war across six islands and 25 regions, from Hogshead down to Arstria. Players lead a small squad that learns new skills and weapons with each victory, battling through the five main regions—Hogshead, Saustralia, Trottsville, Bellyopolis and Arstria. After conquering the mainland, the squad faces a final showdown on the Isle of Swill against the ambiguous Team Lard, and regardless of the winner, all pig nations celebrate the war’s end. A lone soldier doubts the achievement, while Sergeant I.P. Grimly (voiced by Rik Mayall) delivers an upbeat message about the medal earned.
