Summary
Heart of Darkness feels like a polished love‑letter to Another World, yet it stands on its own with a glossy visual approach. Supervised by Éric Chahi, the French auteur assembled a hand‑picked crew of artists to deliver thousands of hand‑drawn 2D frames against rich, pre‑rendered backdrops—a level of cinematic polish that still feels fresh. The score, composed by Hollywood veteran Bruce Broughton, earned a nod at the AIAS Interactive Achievement Awards, highlighting the game’s atmospheric sound design. Critics noted its charm; GamePro’s “Scary Larry” called it a whimsical sibling to Out of This World, and review aggregators recorded broadly positive reactions on the PlayStation. A planned Game Boy Advance version slipped quietly away in 2001, making the original PlayStation/Windows releases the only official windows onto this surreal adventure.
Storyline
Heart of Darkness follows Andy, a nyctophobic boy scolded by his teacher. During a solar eclipse he takes his dog Whiskey to the park, where a shadow creature snatches the pup. Andy builds a homemade spaceship, crashes in the Darklands ruled by the Master of Darkness, and loses his plasma gun to a giant monster.
In the swamps Andy befriends the winged Amigos, who give him a magic rock that lets him control plants and defeat shadows. He earns their trust by growing an apple tree, but the village is destroyed when night falls. With the Amigos’ help he infiltrates the Master’s lair, frees Whiskey, and confronts the Vicious Servant who repeatedly betrays him.
The Master shatters the rock, stripping Andy of its power, but Andy recovers his gun from a monster’s stomach and uses it to defeat the creature. He gathers the remaining fragments, watches the servant kick Whiskey into the dark portal, then reassembles the rock and drops it, destroying the castle. Andy awakens in his treehouse, his mother calling him to dinner, finally having conquered his fear of the dark. The final scene shows the Amigos repairing the wrecked ship, hinting the adventure may have been real.
