Summary
Gex blew up onto the PlayStation with a sarcastic wink and a lizard’s swagger. Voiced by Dana Gould, the gecko peppers the action with relentless one‑liners while you bounce through five TV‑tuned worlds—Graveyard, Kung Fu, Cartoon, Jungle and the final Rez’s Nerve Center—collecting remote fragments to unlock hidden stages.
The PlayStation conversion, handled by Beam Software, trimmed the original’s save‑anywhere quirk for a classic password system but pumped up the graphics and audio, earning it praise for sharper visuals, snappy sound effects and smoother platforming. Over a million copies later, the game still feels crisp on today’s TVs.
Gameplay leans on Gex’s suction‑cup feet, flaming tongue and tail attacks, letting you scramble up walls, hurl fireballs and snatch power‑ups mid‑jump. The level design rewards exploration with secret tapes and extra lives, while the humor keeps the experience breezy and oddly nostalgic.
Storyline
Gex, a young anthropomorphic gecko, lives alone in a mansion on Maui after inheriting his great‑uncle’s fortune. He spends his days lounging in front of the television, munching snacks and hunting for something good to watch.
One night he swallows a housefly that is actually a covert drone sent by Rez, the ruler of the Media Dimension. The drone bugs Gex and drags him into the Media Dimension via his TV, where Rez intends to make the gecko the network’s new mascot.
To get home, Gex darts through the bizarre worlds of the Media Dimension, collecting remote controls and battling Rez’s henchmen. He finally confronts Rez, turning the overlord’s own drones against him to claim victory.
With the threat neutralized, Gex returns to his Maui mansion, flips the TV back on and wonders what’s on HBO.
