Summary
After tossing the evil Rez out of the TV Realm in his first outing, wise‑cracking gecko Gex thinks retirement is his next episode, until two secret‑agent goons knock some sense—or a head‑knock—into him, hand him a special‑agent suit and lure him back with cash and a promise to finally shut Rez down.
Now in full 3D on the PlayStation, the platformer lets you run, tail‑whip, bounce and launch a flying karate kick while climbing walls and ceilings across TV‑themed stages. Colorful flies from broken sets refill health, grant lives, supply oxygen for space levels, and serve as checkpoints. A hub of televisions expands as you capture red, silver and gold remote controls, unlocking new zones and a secret ending. Futuristic areas require power‑ups like cyber‑energy pads that create jump platforms and bridges.
Crystal Dynamics built Gex with a full skeletal animation system, chasing the free‑form charm of Super Mario 64 while sprinkling humor inspired by The Simpsons. Reviewers praised the inventive level design, vibrant graphics and goofy one‑liners, though the camera could be fussy at times. The title earned AIAS nominations for Console Game of the Year and Console Action Game of the Year.
Storyline
After defeating Rez in the Media Dimension, Gex retires from the spotlight and lives in isolation. Two years later, while watching TV, the screen suddenly goes blank and Rez’s face flashes across it. Government agents contact Gex, warning that Rez has returned and asking for his help. He initially refuses, but they kidnap and interrogate him, eventually offering cash and high‑tech gadgets to secure his cooperation.
Gex meets the mysterious female operative, Agent Xtra, who wishes him luck before sending him back into the Media Dimension. He jumps through a slew of television channels, each a bizarre world he must traverse to track down Rez.
The showdown ends when Gex drops a massive television set onto Rez, crippling the villain. Rez then claims, via a TV broadcast, that he is Gex’s father, but Gex simply turns the screen off. The game closes with Gex sharing a hotel room with Nikki from the Pandemonium series.
