Summary

Front Mission 3, known in Japan as Front Mission Third, surprised longtime fans by swapping the series' heavy strategy focus for a more pronounced role‑playing feel. The hallmark of the title is its Double Feature Scenario, which lets you dive into two fully separate campaigns that interlace only through subtle references.

Battles still play out on grid‑based maps, but this time pilots can be injured, ejected, or even commandeered by enemy crews, adding a gritty personal stakes layer. Action Points govern each turn, refreshed by the pilot's rank, while the Link system lets three mechs support one another when the right skills and weapons are equipped.

Between missions you visit towns to re‑customise wanzer chassis, boost armor coatings or attach rollers for blitz movement, and the revamped Network lets you browse a faux‑Internet, exchange in‑game e‑mail and run a Battle Simulator for VR‑style training drills.

Critics responded well, averaging 84 % on GameRankings and earning high marks from both GameSpot and IGN. The game’s soundtrack, scored by Koji Hayama and Hayato Matsuo, remains a fan favourite, and the title has resurfaced in multiple budget re‑releases, including the Square Enix Ultimate Hits line and digital PSN versions.

Storyline

Front Mission 3 takes place in October 2112 after a massive explosion hits the Japanese Defense Force base at Yokosuka. Young wanzer test pilots Kazuki Takemura and his friend Ryogo Kusama are tasked with delivering new Kirishima prototypes from Okinawa to the base. The blast turns them into fugitives chased by OCU and USN forces.

Early in the game the player picks either the USN route, assisted by scientist Emir “Emma” Klamsky, or the DHZ route, guided by Kazuki’s sister Alisa Takemura. Both paths converge on the hunt for MIDAS, a secret USN weapon stolen from an Alaskan site and blamed for the Yokosuka incident.

The trail leads them to a hidden OCU facility inside Taal Volcano, where MIDAS is used against a DHZ‑backed amphibious landing, then onward to the Philippines, Japan and the floating Ocean City off Okinawa to confront the rogue “Imaginary Numbers” genetic project. In the final battle they detonate the original MIDAS at sea, clear their names and finish the game with either a resolved or ambiguous ending depending on the chosen scenario.
