Summary
Forsaken delivers a fast‑paced sci‑fi shooter experience that feels like a hybrid of Descent’s tunnel‑flying combat and Quake’s arena intensity. You pilot a craft through twisting tunnels, picking up power‑ups and handling secondary weapons like missiles and mines while an auto‑leveling system and orientation aid keep the 3‑D navigation manageable. Four single‑player difficulty levels ramp up enemy aggressiveness and tighten ammo supplies, and the game throws in a range of mission targets that reshape your path through the maze.
Multiplayer on the PlayStation pits two players against each other across six modes—from classic free‑for‑all deathmatch to capture‑the‑flag and bounty hunts—while the soundtrack, crafted by The Swarm, pulses with drum‑and‑bass and electronica flair. Critics noted the tight controls; Edge gave the PlayStation version eight out of ten, praising the refined features, and Next Generation called it a decent title that shines by mixing the best of Descent and Quark.
A 2018 HD remaster by Nightdive Studios later brought Forsaken back to modern PCs, preserving its retro charm for a new audience.
Storyline
Forsaken takes place on a ruined Earth in the year 2113, after a catastrophic shockwave from a scientific experiment wiped out all life. The planet’s surface is a barren wasteland littered with the remnants of advanced technology. In the PlayStation version, you assume the role of a scavenger racing against time to locate the planet’s lost treasure hidden among the ruins.
The treasure is the only hope of restoring value to the desolate world. The Nintendo 64 edition flips the objective, tasking you with hunting down and eliminating looters who are after the same priceless cache.
