Summary
The moment I hit the start screen of Final Fantasy Tactics, the 3‑D isometric battlefield drew me in with its gritty, tile‑based fields where every step matters. Units move by squares, and terrain—ranging from slick mud to towering walls—actually changes the odds of each clash, while the hidden Charge Time bar forces you to think about when a character will finally strike. The game's class‑based progression lets you switch among twenty distinct jobs, spending the hard‑earned job points to unlock new abilities and constantly reshaping your roster. Outside combat, the world map feels alive; you hop between towns, pick up side‑quests, and recruit allies, turning each campaign into a sprawling political drama. Even after three decades, the title remains a cult‑classic, having shipped over 2.4 million copies worldwide and still inspiring reruns and remasters for modern consoles.
Storyline
Final Fantasy Tactics unfolds in Ivalice, a medieval‑styled peninsula bordered by sea and populated by humans, intelligent monsters, and lingering relics of ancient machinery. After the Fifty Years War the kingdom suffers economic strain and political chaos; the king’s death leaves an infant heir and a contested regency between Duke Goltana of the Black Lion and Duke Larg of the White Lion, sparking the Lion War. The whole narrative is framed as a chronicle by Alazlam J. Durai, who bases his account on the “Durai Report” penned by his ancestor Olan Durai.\n\nThe story follows Ramza Beoulve, a noble cadet, and his common‑born friend Delita Hyral after they witness the murder of Delita’s sister. Ramza joins mercenary Gafgarion to protect Princess Ovelia, while Delita enlists under Goltana. Along the way they meet Agrias Oaks, machinist Mustadio with the Zodiac Stone, and Cardinal Delacroix of the Glabados Church.\n\nThe Glabados Church, led by High Confessor Marcel Funebris, manipulates the war to gather Zodiac Stones, employing the Knights Templar and Lucavi demons to resurrect Ultima. Ramza defeats the possessed Church leaders, destroys Ultima, and escapes with his sister Alma, who had become its host. In the epilogue Delita marries Ovelia and becomes king, while Ramza and Alma fake their deaths and disappear, their deeds recorded only in the burned chronicles of Olan Durai.
