Summary
Final Doom is essentially a two‑part expansion for the classic Doom series, bundling the episodes TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment. Each megawad follows the Doom II layout of 30 regular levels plus two secret rooms, but they bring fresh textures, new interlude screens, and a hefty dose of extra challenge.
The biggest talking point among fans is the difficulty spike – especially in The Plutonia Experiment, which was deliberately crafted for players who had already mastered Doom II on hard mode. The level design leans into tight corridors, relentless enemy placement, and clever secret routes that keep even seasoned runners on their toes.
When the game landed on PlayStation, the core experience stayed recognizable, yet the console port trimmed the roster to 30 levels and stripped out some of the toughest foes like the Cyberdemon, Arch‑vile, and Spider Mastermind. Aubrey Hodges replaced the original rock‑heavy soundtrack with a darker ambient score, and several sky textures were swapped for new starry or flame‑filled versions. The trade‑off was a lower frame rate and simplified level geometry, a common compromise for early console ports.
Critics were split: many praised the massive, labyrinthine maps and the nostalgic feel of more Doom, while others lamented the lack of new weapons or enemies and pointed out the aging engine. Still, the PlayStation Magazine gave it a solid 9/10, calling it an essential addition for anyone who loves the series.
Storyline
Final Doom (PlayStation) is split into two distinct episodes that continue the classic Doom saga. In TNT: Evilution the UAC has set up a research base on one of Jupiter’s moons, where they experiment with dimensional gateways. A supply ship arrives early, but it is actually a massive demonic vessel that opens its gates and rains hellish creatures onto the outpost, slaughtering or zombifying the marines. The nameless space marine, who was away on a walk, survives the initial onslaught, swears vengeance, and battles through the ruined complex until he finally defeats the Icon of Sin, ending the invasion with a mysterious blue glow in the demon’s skull.
The Plutonia Experiment picks up after Hell’s earlier assault on Earth. The UAC, now under new management, develops a Quantum Accelerator to close Hell’s gates, but a new ring of seven portals opens and overwhelms the facility. Six gates are sealed, but the seventh remains guarded by a colossal Gatekeeper capable of opening dimensional rifts. While the rest of the marines are ordered to the site, the marine on leave at the beach arrives first and decides to infiltrate the complex alone, confronting the Gatekeeper and the surrounding horrors to stop the final breach.
