Summary
Earthworm Jim 2 on PlayStation is a surprisingly quirky remix of the original platformer. Screaming Pink, Inc. handled the port, keeping every level intact while swapping in upgraded audio and a fresh set of background art that gives the worlds a distinct visual flavor.
The game still feels like a 2‑D shooter, but the variety of mechanics keeps each stage fresh – there’s an auto‑aiming gun, the ridiculous “Barn Blaster,” and even a chip‑butty power‑up that pushes Jim’s suit to 200 % strength. My favorite tricks involve Snott: the little sidekick lets me cling to walls, swing across gaps, or act as a parachute, which is essential for the salamander disguise segment, the trivia‑show level, and that wild balloon‑head sequence.
Despite these extras, reviewers such as Computer and Video Games gave the console version a meager 3 / 10, complaining that the hardware upgrade brought little more than the same content in a new shell.
Storyline
Earthworm Jim 2 on PlayStation follows the heroic worm as he must rescue Princess What's‑Her‑Name from the nefarious Psy‑Crow. The platformer throws Jim into a series of bizarre challenges, from navigating psychedelic dreamscapes to battling oversized insects and malfunctioning robots.
Mid‑game the pace quickens when Jim is forced into a frantic race against Psy‑Crow through a twisted obstacle course filled with moving platforms and deadly traps. After overcoming the gauntlet, Jim finally reaches the Princess and frees her, only for the three characters to peel away their disguises and reveal themselves as cows. The absurd twist caps off the game’s off‑beat humor and reinforces its reputation for surreal storytelling.
