Summary
Driver 2: Back on the Streets blew me away with its daring step beyond pure car‑chases. For the first time the series let me hop out of the driver's seat, wander city sidewalks, and commandeer any wheel that suited the moment—whether a sleek sports coupe or a beat‑up Chevy with missing hubcaps. The split‑screen mode let a friend and I race or duel through the streets side‑by‑side, a rarity on the original PlayStation.
Storyline
Driver 2: Back on the Streets follows NYPD detectives John Tanner and his partner Tobias Jones as they chase a treacherous money‑man known as Pink Lenny. Lenny has double‑crossed Solomon Caine, a powerful crime lord, and now works for Caine’s rival, the Brazilian mob boss Alvaro Vasquez. Their hunt begins in Chicago, where a bar shootout leaves Vasquez’s lieutenant dead and the city’s gang war spiraling out of control.
Tanner and Jones go undercover, interrogate witnesses and follow Vasquez’s men to a Havana warehouse that ships illegal hardware from Cuba. After a brief clash in Havana, Lenny escapes on a ship bound for San Diego, forcing the detectives to head to Las Vegas. In Vegas they assist Caine’s operations, destroy Vasquez’s supply depot and negotiate a shaky truce, while Jones continues searching for Lenny.
The trail ends in Rio de Janeiro, where Vasquez’s gang monitors the docks and airport. Lenny attempts to flee by helicopter, but Tanner rescues Jones, shoots down the chopper and captures Lenny after the crash. The game concludes with Lenny’s return to Chicago and a surprising reconciliation between Caine and Vasquez.
