Summary

Destrega drops you into free‑roaming 3‑D arenas instead of static fighting screens. I can dash with R1, jump with X, block with L1, and sidestep around foes using Circle. The camera tracks your movements through crumbling castles, caverns or open fields, giving each bout a mini‑adventure feel.

Combat uses a rock‑paper‑scissors triangle: a quick Square strike, a slower Triangle blow and the Circle sidestep each outrun one another. When the charge bar turns yellow, green or blue, I unlock magic—Bidu (fast), Est (strong) or Foh (wide)—which follow the same hierarchy and can be stacked into level‑1,‑2,‑3 or a single level‑4 spell for huge damage.

The game packs several modes—Versus, Team Battle, Time Attack and Endurance—that let you test speed, stamina or teamwork. The depth of combo creation keeps matches feeling fresh, while the free‑movement feel was unusual for a 1998 PlayStation fighter. I still fire up Destrega when I crave a tactical brawler that rewards both timing and strategy.

Storyline

Destrega tells the tale of the Strega, a mysterious order that arrived in the small country of Zamuel a thousand years ago. They gifted the people powerful artifacts called Jeno, which let ordinary humans wield magical abilities. The newfound power sparked greed, and Zamuel’s armies swept across the continent, turning it into a battlefield of destruction. Centuries later, the relics resurfaced in the Empire of Ipsen, prompting the emperor to task Lord Zauber with restoring them.

When news of the revival reached the surviving Strega, they begged the emperor to seal the relics, but he declared war instead. The ensuing clash wiped out most of the imperial family, high‑ranking ministers, and countless Strega. Zauber swiftly crushed rival lords, seized the throne as Prime Minister, and began eliminating anyone who might threaten his rule. Now he hunts the last Strega survivors, determined to keep the relics’ power under his control.
