Summary

Crash Bandicoot: Warped throws players into the Time‑Twisting Machine, a hub split into five chambers, each unlocking five level portals and a boss after all crystals are snagged. It’s the first entry where Coco joins Crash as a playable partner, letting you hop, spin and slide while hunting 25 scattered crystals before Cortex and Uka Uka do the same. The game sprinkles checkpoint boxes, TNT explosives and nitro crates that blast on contact, rewarding diligent box‑breaking with extra lives and hidden gems.

Beyond the core stages, players chase 45 collectible gems and a suite of “relics” earned in Time Trial mode, where frozen‑time crates momentarily pause the clock for quicker runs. Relics unlock a secret warp room filled with bonus levels, giving the platformer a strong replay hook.

Development raced under a ten‑and‑a‑half‑month schedule and a $2 million budget, prompting Naughty Dog to craft three brand‑new engines for airplane, jet‑ski and motorcycle segments, while preserving the classic engine for familiar action. Innovations included realistic water reflections, a true shadow beneath Crash (instead of the floating disc), and an arcade‑friendly AI in aerial fights. Critics praised its varied level design and polish, cementing Warped as a beloved classic among platform enthusiasts.

Storyline

Crash Bandicoot: Warped picks up right after the events of the second game. When the wreckage of Doctor Neo Cortex’s space station crashes onto Earth, it unleashes the evil entity Uka Uka, Aku Aku’s twin brother.

Uka Uka joins forces with Cortex and the time‑obsessed Doctor Nefarious Tropy, who has built a Time Twisting Machine to gather powerful crystals scattered throughout history and use their energy to enslave the planet.

Crash and his sister Coco Bandicoot travel through time on the machine, racing the villains to collect the crystals themselves. Along the way they battle foes such as Tiny Tiger, Dingodile and Doctor N. Gin. After defeating Cortex and Uka Uka, the Time Twisting Machine implodes, trapping the trio in a timeless prison.
