Summary
Colony Wars immerses you in League fleet recruitment, offering first‑person cockpit or third‑person chase view. Every ship boasts separate shield and armor meters, forcing you to switch weapons—purple lasers for shields, red lasers for hull. Thrusters work only while held, letting you burst‑fire and drift for Newtonian‑style manoeuvres. Advanced lighting and particle effects push the PlayStation hardware.
The campaign splits into Acts of three missions each, with branching paths that remember success or failure, leading to multiple endings. Selecting a pre‑assigned fighter per mission, you’ll juggle energy guns, missiles, EMPs, and even a grapple gun to snare high‑value targets. Countermeasures let you shake off incoming missiles, adding a tactical layer.
You can pull up a detailed combat record and an audible database of planets and ships. The dynamic mission tree subtly hides failure, moving you forward without a harsh "game over," which keeps the narrative flowing.
Storyline
Colony Wars unfolds in a future where the Earth Empire has exhausted the Solar System’s resources by the fifth millennium. Expeditionary sleeper ships harvest distant worlds, but the colonies grow restless as most of their wealth fuels Earth’s elite. After a peaceful revolt in the 47th century, the Tzar personally annihilates a rebellious planet, prompting the surviving colonies to unite as the League of Free Worlds under a figure known only as the Father.
Months after the decisive Battle of Bennay, you enlist with the League and fight hit‑and‑run raids in the Gallonigher system. Capturing the Gallonigher battle platform lets the League open a warp to the Draco system; losing it forces a retreat to the resource‑rich Diomedes system and a possible push toward Alpha Centauri. Each campaign branch leads to different stakes, from a surprise counter‑attack on Draco to defending Diomedes against the Empire’s super‑titan flagship.
The ending hinges on your performance. A flawless run can seal the Sol warp hole, imprison the Earth Empire and spark a galaxy‑wide rebellion that ends with the League’s independence. Lesser outcomes range from uneasy peace with the Empire to total defeat, where the League is crushed or its remnants flee into exile.
