Summary

The third Chapter of Psygnosis’ space‑combat saga, Colony Wars: Red Sun, drops me into Valdmar’s gritty mercenary life, where every mission can feel like a freelance gig or a pivotal story beat. Unlike the straight‑lined missions of its predecessors, the game presents an almost open‑world map; I can skim through a list of contracts in the Status Menu, picking side jobs for cash while the ‘P’‑marked missions push the main plot forward.

Choosing from nine starships, each with its own weapon mix, feels rewarding because the upgrade system lets me jam new parts—scatter guns, subspace dampeners, utility drones—into predefined slots, though I can’t install more than three identical lasers. The familiar velocity sight returns, and when I lock onto a massive carrier I can zero‑in on specific turrets or engines.

After several North‑American release delays, the title finally landed via Midway in June 2000 and earned generally favorable reviews, cementing its reputation as a deep, replayable space simulator.

Storyline

Colony Wars: Red Sun takes place during the Vengeance era, a turbulent period in the series' timeline. The story follows Alexander Lyron Valdemar, a miner stationed in the Dendray system, who is plagued by vivid dreams of an alien race called the Sha'Har and a mysterious vessel known as the Red Sun. When a shadowy figure called the General orders him to investigate, Valdemar is thrust into a galaxy‑wide crisis.

Abandoning his former life as a civilian miner, the player becomes a mercenary tasked with uncovering the Red Sun’s secrets and its connection to the survival of the galaxy. Unlike previous entries where you pilot League of Free Worlds or Colonial Navy starfighters, this installment puts you in the boots of a reluctant hero fighting for answers. The narrative blends personal mystery with the larger threat posed by the Sha'Har.
