Summary
Centipede’s 1998 makeover turns the original Atari shooter into a fully 3‑D PlayStation experience. In addition to a faithful “Arcade” mode that lets you blast the classic centipedes, spiders, fleas and scorpions, the game adds an “Adventure” campaign packed with brand‑new monsters like dragonflies, firebugs and killer mushrooms that can throw projectiles or reshape the mushroom field. The mushroom growth mechanic still forces you to keep clearing the screen, but new weapons and skills keep the action fresh as you progress through linked levels. Development came from the Maryland‑based Leaping Lizard team, and the title marks Hasbro Interactive’s first release under the revived Atari label. A NextGen preview called it “a solid 3D shooter with a nice, if young, story,” suggesting it’s easy enough for kids yet enjoyable for anyone who likes fast‑paced nostalgia.
Storyline
Centipede on PlayStation follows the legend of Weedom, a cluster of villages living in harmony with nature. Every hundred years, armored beasts rise from the dark core of the earth to serve the Queen Pede, who seeks to destroy the Wee people. A magic stick selects a hero, and the player becomes Wally Gudmunzsun, the chosen defender. Wally pilots "The Shooter," a vehicle built to blast the insect menace, and journeys through five worlds—Weedom, Frostonia, Inferium, Enigma, and Evile—each comprising roughly five levels and ending with a boss fight. Defeating the insects each century seems to end the threat, but the legend warns that the curse will return until the Queen Pede is finally vanquished.
