Summary
Castlevania Chronicles finally gave American fans a chance to play the beloved 2‑D whip‑wielding action of Simon Belmont’s original hunt. The disc packs two modes: the faithful Original Mode, directly lifted from Konami’s 1993 X68000 release, and an Arrange Mode that layers a freshly rendered intro, new Ayami Kojima character art, re‑balanced enemies, and a completely re‑recorded soundtrack by Sōta Fujimori. Arrange also unlocks a nifty art gallery showcasing Kojima’s illustrations and an interview with series legend Koji Igarashi, plus a Time Attack mode that challenges you to breeze through stages before the clock runs out. Technical tweaks were subtle but welcome—U.S. and EU editions cured the music slowdown that plagued the Japanese version, and the PSOne Classic re‑release in 2008 let a new generation dive straight into both versions. Fans appreciate that the core formula feels untouched while the extra content makes the 1997 classic feel fresh enough for modern PlayStation owners.
Storyline
Castlevania Chronicles drops you into the late 17th‑century nightmare of Transylvania, where the dreaded Count Dracula has risen again after a century of sleep. The vampire’s return sends the local populace fleeing in terror, but one man steps forward: Simon Belmont, armed with his legendary Vampire Killer whip. Players guide Simon through the sprawling, gothic corridors of Dracula’s castle, battling monsters and solving traps along the way. His ultimate goal is to confront the Lord of Darkness and put an end to the blood‑soaked reign. By defeating Dracula, Simon hopes to restore peace to the frightened lands of Transylvania.
