Summary
Bushido Blade 2 takes the original’s realism and pushes it into a bigger, bleaker arena. The sequel swaps the single long level for six distinct arenas and adds a first‑person view, dual sword attacks, and six fighting modes that still refuse life bars, time limits, or mercy.
A single well‑placed strike can still end a bout, thanks to the game’s body‑damage system, and you can slash, toss, or even shoot opponents—with weapons ranging from katanas and naginatas to an M‑16 wielded by Tsubame and a revolver for Katze. Twelve new fighters raise the roster to twenty, each tied to either the Shainto or Narukagami school, and a bonus‑battle system unlocks hidden characters such as the clan clowns.
The character‑unlock method is clever: survive a stage with a temporary character and that fighter joins the permanent roster. Some secrets require a flawless Slash Mode run under fifteen minutes, rewarding speed‑obsessed players.
Critics lauded the title’s originality; GameRankings showed favorable scores, Famitsu gave 29/40, and it earned a nomination for Console Fighting Game of the Year. It topped Japanese charts at launch and placed ninth in North America that November.
A 2008 PlayStation Network re‑release introduced the game to new fans, cementing its reputation as a must‑have for anyone hunting a uniquely brutal fighting experience.
Storyline
Bushido Blade 2 opens with a flashback to the 13th‑century island of Konoshima, where two feudal clans—the Kagami and the Sue—served the same Daimyō in peace. A mainland war toppled their lord; the Kagami pledged allegiance to the new ruler, while the Sue clung to loyalty to their fallen master, sparking a clash that forced the Sue off the island and into battle. Defeated, the Sue lost their sacred sword, the Yugiri, and for centuries the two lineages fought hidden, lethal skirmishes.
Eight hundred years later, the Shainto school, made up of the Sue’s surviving descendants, launches a raid on the Kagami’s Narukagami Shintoryu dojo at the Meikyokan headquarters. Their goal is two‑fold: reclaim the lost Yugiri and eliminate the last Kagami heir. The opening FMV dramatizes this assault, which the player later experiences in full during story mode.
