Summary

Broken Helix tries to stand out on the original PlayStation by branding itself as a "4‑D" shooter – the fourth dimension being real‑time progression that lets you toggle objects you’ve encountered earlier, opening up new routes later on. The developers even rewrote the game from an early first‑person concept into the over‑the‑shoulder view we get, which explains some of the clunky camera work that reviewers complained about, including occasional false‑positive detections that end the run instantly. Graphically, the grainy polygons and dim lighting make it a challenge to spot enemies, but the narrative shines. Critics praised the multi‑branch storyline that can end in four distinct ways and especially loved Bruce Campbell’s deadpan delivery, even if the supporting voice work felt over‑acted. In short, the game’s quirky humor and branching plot often outweigh its control and visual shortcomings for players who enjoy sci‑fi sleuthing.

Storyline

Broken Helix is set in a fictional version of Area 51 in the year 2026. The player controls Jake Burton, a Marine explosives expert whose father died in a mysterious plane crash while working at the base. Jake receives a covert phone order to defuse two bombs on Levels 1 and 2, while a shadowy figure warns him that the sinister Marine commander Black Dawn has been ordered to kill him once the mission is complete.

After the first bomb is cleared in a men’s bathroom and the automated guns on Level 2 are shut down, Jake is faced with a field that blocks all outside radio contact. From this point the game splits into several possible storylines. In the most common route, Jake teams up with reporter Sara Compton, gains access to a satellite‑link amplifier, and uncovers Project Broken Helix – a secret biological‑warfare experiment that fuses alien DNA with human cells, creating hostile hybrid creatures. Jake learns that his father was killed for discovering a cure.

Guided by the scientist Reese, Jake retrieves a force‑field device, an alien weapon component, and sets explosives to destroy a fusion‑reactor droid while protecting a living alien. The alien queen eventually kills the traitor Jenkins, and Jake and Reese escape the base, only to be briefly confronted by a sergeant before the mysterious man orders their release. Jake is later evacuated and retires with his wife, while Reese disappears.

Alternative branches let Jake side with the hybrids, assist Sara in a live interview that ends in a gruesome broadcast, or follow a darker path where he becomes a target for the base’s own kill‑meter. Each route ends with the strange man observing the outcome and remarking, “there was a better way…”.
