Summary

Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena felt like a bridge between classic turn‑based wargames and a tabletop RPG. Each month you move units between your castles, manage mana to summon or upkeep monsters, and can even send your Rune Knight on random quests that may tip the balance later.

Battles unfold on a hex grid where a Rune Knight and its monster squad act in sequence, with the leader’s Rune Area bolstering the troops—if the knight falls, the monsters weaken or can be captured. The game uses a simple element wheel, and the 2000 Grand Edition re‑tooled it into a rock‑paper‑scissors scheme while adding six‑player multiplayer and a fully playable Esgares Empire. The updated version also gave monsters equipment, swapped the 3D intro for an anime opening and introduced Japanese voice talent.

With 12‑turn battles, promotion paths for both knights and monsters, and a tight blend of strategy and role‑playing stats, the title remains a cult favorite for anyone who loves deep, tactical kingdom management on the original PlayStation.

Storyline

Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena opens on the central plains of Forsena, where the kingdom of Almekia finally secures peace after defeating Norgard in the year 214. The calm is shattered in the second month of 215 when Admiral Zemeckis assassinates King Henguist, causing Almekia to collapse and the admiral to proclaim himself emperor of the new Esgares Empire. Zemeckis, convinced he is falsely accused of treason, rebels against the king after a visit from the Rune Knight Cador, known as the Death Knight, and rallies other Rune Knights to his cause. The rebellion succeeds, the nation is renamed, and King Henguist falls at Cador’s hand. Prince Lance, the king’s son, escapes with the loyal Rune Knights to the neighboring Kingdom of Padstow, setting the stage for a continent‑wide war among Forsena’s nations.
