Summary

Breath of Fire III thrusts you into a vibrant 3‑D world that still clings to its 2‑D roots, with hand‑drawn character sprites dancing across fully modeled scenery. The overhead isometric camera can spin, tilt, and peek around obstacles, while voice acting adds a new layer of personality to the classic RPG formula. Each party member brings a unique special ability, turning puzzles into opportunities for clever exploration.

Beyond the main quest, the game sprinkles in a Master System where characters apprentice under specific NPCs to learn fresh skills and tweak stats, and a Fairy Village that grows under your care, unlocking items and mini‑games like an expanded fishing interface. Setting up camp on the world map restores health and lets you chat with allies, while chrysms let Ryu shift into various dragon forms. Combat stays turn‑based, with agility dictating turn order, and a three‑character party can be arranged in tactical formations for extra edge.

Developed by Capcom’s Studio 3 under director Makato Ikehara, the title showcases Tatsuya Yoshikawa’s sprite art and a jazz‑infused soundtrack by Yoshino Aoki and Akari Kaida, complete with the ending ballad “Pure Again."

Storyline

Breath of Fire III follows Ryu, the last member of the ancient Brood—a race of humans who can transform into dragons—as he searches for the truth about his people and tries to reunite with his surrogate family. After a band of horse‑men mercenaries burn down his home, Ryu is rescued by a woodsman and soon meets Nina, a winged princess and magician, along with the cat‑like thief Rei, the amnesiac orphan Teepo, the inventive Momo, the seasoned warrior Garr, and the quirky onion‑like creature Peco. Together they battle crime lord Mikba, confront the Guardians who once slaughtered the Brood at the behest of the goddess Myria, and uncover a plot that pits humanity against the remaining dragon spirit Ladon. The party’s journey takes them from the ruined lighthouse of Rhapala to the desert city of Caer Xhan, through an escalator‑filled fortress where Myria offers Ryu a peaceful exile, and finally to a crumbling station where the spirit of Yggdrasil, channeled through Peco, helps them defeat Myria and her sister Deis. In the end, Ryu and his friends—Nina, Momo, Rei, and Peco—escape the collapsing station, while Garr turns to stone, and they set out for home, leaving humanity’s fate in their own hands.
