Summary
Brave Fencer Musashi caught my eye with its blend of fast‑paced sword action and solid RPG depth. You wander pre‑rendered, FF7‑style backdrops, talk to NPCs whose schedules shift between day and night, and watch Musashi’s fatigue rise if you skip sleep — an outdoor nap can even leave him helpless until he recovers.
The core combat revolves around two distinct weapons: Fusion, a katana‑like blade good for combo chaining and absorbing Bincho magic energy, and Lumina, a massive double‑edged sword that must be infused with elemental scrolls to unlock devastating attacks. Throughout the journey you collect scrolls, Legendary Armor parts that enable climbing and double jumps, and odd toys that refresh each chapter’s inventory.
Square’s early‑era adventure also includes voiced dialogue, quirky English localization (alcohol‑themed names were swapped for soda names), and a soundtrack by Tsuyoshi Sekito. The game even shipped in the North American Collector’s CD with a Final Fantasy VIII demo, making it a nostalgic must‑play for any retro fan.
Storyline
A young boy named Musashi, the reincarnation of the legendary Brave Fencer Musashi who saved the Allucaneet Kingdom 150 years earlier, is summoned by Princess Fillet to stop the invading Thirstquencher Empire. He receives the blade Fusion and is tasked with retrieving Lumina, the Sword of Luminescence, before the empire can claim it, hoping the quest will let him return home.
With help from treasure hunter Jon, Musashi tracks down the Five Elemental Scrolls—Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Sky—each guarded by a crest guardian. Along the way he clashes with rival Kojiro, rescues a kidnapped Fillet (the real princess was hidden by impostors), and battles Vambees and other foes.
The final Scroll leads him to the floating Soda Fountain, where leader Flatski demands Lumina in exchange for the princess. The exchange releases the sealed Wizard of Darkness, but Musashi, using Lumina’s true power, defeats the wizard, frees the kingdom, and returns the princess before taking Lumina back to its resting place.
