Summary
Azure Dreams lets me dive into the ever‑changing Tower of Monsters, where each descent starts at level 1 but the layout is freshly generated every time. I hunt denizens, collect treasure and scout monster eggs that hatch into familiars, each hiding secret spells and quirks that I can train outside the tower. Rust traps pepper the halls, so I often equip gear that won’t corrode or sacrifice a familiar with an Oleem to bail out safely.
The loot fuels the growth of Monsbaiya; I can fund a theatre, a hospital, a casino and even a bowling alley, each unlocking mini‑games or new love interests—Mia appears after the library is built, while Cherrl shows up with a hospital. Seven romance routes give the game a sweet side quest that the Game Boy Color version simply drops.
Playing the American release feels different from the Japanese one, which added full voice‑overs, a larger cherub on the title screen and re‑styled monster‑book graphics, plus a more colorful selector.
Storyline
Azure Dreams takes place in the desert town of Monsbaiya, a settlement that thrives thanks to the mysterious Monster Tower looming above it. The town’s famed monster tamer, Guy, vanished inside the tower on a stormy day, leaving his family struggling to survive. Fifteen years later his son Koh finally reaches the age required to enter the tower, hoping to uncover his father’s fate. Inside, Koh befriends a talking familiar named Kewne, a monster capable of human speech. Together they set out to climb the tower’s many floors and discover the truth behind Guy’s disappearance.
