Summary
When the Raven in Isaac City got the vague, high‑payoff request to infiltrate the underground complex called Amber Crown, I could almost hear the hum of the AC's servos as I slipped into the cockpit.
Project Phantasma adds a proper Arena where you pit your customized mech against rivals for extra credits, a Replay mode that records your battles from any camera angle, and full DualShock support with force‑feedback on explosions.
The game lets you import a save from the original Armored Core, preserving all the parts and exclusive weapons you’ve earned, or start fresh and lose those bonuses for a brand‑new build. Only 17 missions appear, but each offers far more tactical depth than the fifty in the predecessor.
Multiplayer returns via the PlayStation Link Cable for true split‑screen duels, letting two pilots fight on separate TVs while a memory card carries over their personal configurations.
While it never reached Europe, the North American release landed in late ’98, and it resurfaced on the PlayStation Store for PS4/5 in 2025 as part of PS Plus Premium. Critics praised the refined mission design and the busy Arena, though some felt the single‑player campaign could be finished in just a few days.
Storyline
In Armored Core: Project Phantasma, the Raven receives a cryptic message promising a huge payout for infiltrating the underground testing complex Amber Crown. Inside, the Raven meets Sumika Juutilainen, an escaped prisoner from the shadowy Doomsday Organization, who becomes the player’s primary client and guide. Together they take on a series of contracts while the Doomsday Organization watches from the shadows. The deeper they go, the true purpose of Amber Crown is revealed.
A rival pilot named Stinger, employed by the Doomsday Organization, repeatedly clashes with the Raven as missions progress. Stinger’s aggression escalates when the secret Project Phantasma—a weapon system capable of tipping the balance of power—is uncovered. Both Sumika and Stinger were test subjects for the project, and Stinger seeks to harness its power against the Raven. The rivalry culminates in Stinger merging with the Phantasma weapon for a final showdown.
The Raven defeats the fused Stinger‑Phantasma and destroys the Project Phantasma facility. With the weapon eliminated, the Doomsday Organization collapses. The Amber Crown complex is left abandoned, its secrets buried.
