Summary

The game that launched my obsession with the PlayStation is Ape Escape, famously the first title to demand the DualShock’s analog sticks. From a breezy third‑person view you guide Jimmy and his high‑tech gear, using both sticks to steer, aim and swing.

The arsenal is surprisingly deep: a Stun Club for close‑range knocks, a Time Net that traps apes in a slow‑motion bubble, and a rubber raft for waterways plus a water‑net for underwater creep‑mission. Cookies restore health, while hidden Specter Coins unlock goofy mini‑games like Ski Kidz Racing.

The two‑year development sprint involved a 25‑person crew led by producer Susumu Takatsuka, with Yuji Yamada steering programming and Takamitsu Iijima crafting the quirky characters. The team dreamed of an open‑field 3D sandbox, and the DualShock controls became the core mechanic they built around.

Critics praised its innovative control scheme, vibrant graphics and Soichi Terada’s funky soundtrack, earning a Metacritic 90 and the Greatest Hits badge after surpassing 1.4 million sales. Its legacy endures through sequels, cameo appearances and a 2022 PS Plus Deluxe re‑release on modern consoles.

Storyline

The story of Ape Escape kicks off when Specter, a white‑haired monkey from a monkey‑themed amusement park, dons a prototype Monkey/Peak Point Helmet created by a professor. The helmet boosts his intelligence but also twists his mind, turning him evil. Specter equips the other monkeys with the helmets and unleashes them to seize the laboratory where the professor and his assistant Katie are building a time machine.

Spike and his best friend Buzz arrive at the lab just as Specter activates the device, sending the whole group—humans and apes—spanning various eras of time. The professor tasks Spike with recapturing every monkey scattered across history and returning them to the present, warning that uncontrolled apes could rewrite history.

Throughout the adventure Spike battles Specter’s brain‑washed ally Jake and chases the apes through the age of dinosaurs, medieval times, and modern day. After finally rounding up all the apes, he confronts Specter in the deranged theme park and then in the “Peak Point Matrix,” an alternate universe. Spike defeats Specter, who is captured and sent back to the zoo.
