Summary

Allied General puts you at the helm of Allied forces in a turn‑based WWII sandbox, built on the classic Panzer General engine. The Windows version introduced pop‑up windows, multi‑screen view, and adjustable resolution—something the original DOS game lacked. A fan‑made ‘Allied Panzer General’ ports these UI tweaks back to DOS and adds bug fixes. In Germany the title appeared as Panzer General II, while the true Panzer General II was released elsewhere as Panzer General IIID.

Critics gave the PlayStation port strong marks—PC Gamer US scored it 89%, and AllGame and Next Generation also praised its faithfulness to the original formula. Reviewers pointed out that the AI remained quirky, but welcomed the new email‑play and window flexibility. By September 1997 sales surpassed 50 000 units, a decent showing for a niche strategy title. For anyone who enjoys layered tactical maps and alternate WWII scenarios, Allied General still delivers solid command‑room drama.

Storyline

Allied General lets players dive into four distinct World War II campaigns, each focusing on a different nation’s fight. The Soviet campaign kicks off with the Winter War against Finland, moves to the desperate defenses of Moscow, and, if you succeed, launches a sweeping counter‑attack. The first British campaign drops you into the North African desert at Sidi Barrani, battling German and Italian forces. A second British campaign continues the story, culminating in the Allied push against the Mareth Line in Tunis and the subsequent invasion of Europe. The American campaign mirrors the later British effort, starting with Operation Torch in North Africa and carrying forward to the European landings, while individual scenarios let you command either side in isolated battles.
