Summary

Yoshi's Island DS takes the beloved pastel‑crayon world of its SNES predecessor and stretches it across the Nintendo DS’s two screens, giving a tall vertical view that lets you see far above and below Yoshi’s jumps. The core loop stays the same—Yoshi nabs enemies, turns them into eggs, and flutters through side‑scrolling levels—but the handheld adds five different babies, each granting a unique power that becomes a required puzzle piece.

Baby Mario dashes and creates special “M” blocks, Baby Peach lets Yoshi glide on wind currents, Baby Donkey Kong swings on vines and sends exploding eggs, Baby Wario summons a magnet to pull metal, and Baby Bowser spews fireballs while preventing new eggs. Switching riders at key moments adds strategy without altering the classic egg‑throwing combat.

Critics praised the game for staying faithful while feeling fresh, noting the vibrant visuals and inventive baby abilities. The blind‑spot between the screens drew minor complaint, and 100% completion proved tougher than the original, but sales topped 2.9 million worldwide and the title later resurfaced on the Wii U Virtual Console.

Storyline

A mysterious floating island drifts over Yoshi’s Island, and a group of children disappears from the island school. Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong and Baby Wario manage to avoid the kidnapping, so Yoshi teams up with the four babies to investigate the hovering mass and rescue the missing kids.

The adventure mirrors the original Yoshi’s Island story: Kamek, Bowser’s magician, has already snatched Baby Luigi and is hunting the “star children” – seven babies whose hearts hold great power. The Yoshi clan receives help from the stork, Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, and later Baby Wario and Baby Bowser, each contributing a special ability.

After a series of forts and castles, the group confronts Kamek and Bowser, defeats them, and rescues Baby Luigi along with the other captured infants. The island’s secret is revealed, the castle self‑destructs, and the storks return all the babies to their homes. In a post‑credits reveal the six known star children are the babies we’ve met, and the final one is a newly‑hatched Baby Yoshi.
