Summary

X‑Men: The Official Game (sometimes called X3: The Official Game) on the Nintendo DS takes the movie tie‑in in a fresh direction. Instead of the usual side‑scroll beat ’em up, it presents a top‑down action experience with 3‑D characters across forty levels, using the DS’s dual screens to separate gameplay from status info.

The handheld version lets you swap between Wolverine, Iceman, Nightcrawler and, uniquely, Magneto. Each hero feels distinct: Nightcrawler teleports, Wolverine delivers ground‑based melee, Iceman fires icy projectiles, and Magneto manipulates metal—breaking doors and hurling objects. Some stages lock you into a single character, while others reward quick switches to exploit enemy weaknesses.

Controls are split between the pad for movement and the touch screen for attacks, giving a tactile feel that matches the DS’s strengths. The game also boasts voice work from the film’s cast—Hugh Jackman, Alan Cumming, Shawn Ashmore, Patrick Stewart, Tyler Mane and Eric Dane—adding a cinematic touch despite its mixed critical reception.

Storyline

During a session in the Danger Room, Wolverine faces Sabretooth and loses until Iceman intervenes, while Cyclops is too grief‑stricken to train after Jean Grey’s apparent death. Professor X warns Logan not to set the Danger Room to Level 10 again and sends the team to Alkali Lake to retrieve irreplaceable Cerebro parts. Nightcrawler infiltrates William Stryker’s ruined base, discovers Hydra agents looting it, and teams with Colossus to secure the parts while Logan and Storm investigate the Sentinel project. Storm is kidnapped by Lady Deathstrike, rescued by Logan, and a massive Sentinel called Master Mold awakens from the lake, prompting the X‑Men and Deathstrike to flee.
Iceman thwarts Pyro’s nuclear meltdown, and Nightcrawler with Storm stop Multiple Man from destroying a bridge. Logan follows Deathstrike to Japan, battles Hydra forces, “kills” Deathstrike again, and confronts Silver Samurai, learning that Hydra helped Stryker build the Sentinels and that Master Mold’s activation was a mistake. The team learns of a device in Hong Kong that can stop Master Mold, and Magneto and Sabretooth are called in to assist.
In Hong Kong the X‑Jet is shot down by Sentinels; Iceman recovers the device and Magneto uses it to cripple Master Mold, though he is subdued by Jason Stryker’s telepathy. Nightcrawler disables the Sentinel’s control center and neural net, guided by Jason’s good half, while Iceman destroys its core. Logan fights feral clones of himself and later battles Sabretooth, throwing him from a height as Sabretooth tries to escape with Jason.
Jason dies thanking Nightcrawler, Magneto departs vowing future conflict, and the game ends with Cyclops arriving at Jean Grey’s house, finding her alive but unstable, and begging to be let inside.
