Summary
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble! lets you swing Joe’s cinematic moves across the DS’ twin screens while the touchscreen becomes your toolbox for quirky VFX powers. The VFX gauge fuels Slow, Scratch, Split, Slide and Touch – each a simple finger swipe or tap that can freeze time, shatter debris, bisect the level, swap the displays, or flip hidden switches. These abilities blend seamlessly with the beat‑’em‑up combat: land punches, dodge to daze foes, and rack up V‑Medals that turn into V‑Points for unlocking new attacks.
The game’s cel‑shaded, 3D‑on‑2D look matches its console cousins, and Jasmine makes her debut as Joe’s sidekick. Behind the scenes, a tight twenty‑person Clover Studio crew, led by director Junichi Ota and producer Atsushi Inaba, wrestled with the DS’s polygon budget to keep the visual punch lively. Hideki Kamiya contributed story advice while Takeshi Miura supplied the rock‑filled soundtrack, and the touchscreen was deliberately tuned for finger play, making the action feel fluid rather than stylus‑bound.
Storyline
The story of Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble! opens on the set of Captain Blue’s new action film inside the Movieland theme park. When the villain group Madow steals the only copy of the reel, Joe and his sister Jasmine give chase. Because Joe can’t use Movie Energy in the real world, Captain Blue has Silvia record him with a V‑Cam, letting him become Viewtiful Joe.
The duo races through park attractions, battling stolen‑hero foes like Gadget‑Cop, Killer Hands, Alter Woman and the Meta Rangers. Each victory returns a fragment of the stolen hero‑ness and brings them nearer the reel. Their chase ends at the Viewtiful Joe ride, where they fight Blade Master Alastor and his Six Majin robot before confronting the cloud‑like Queen Heinderella, leader of Madow.
Heinderella reveals she wants the reel because it contains Captain Blue’s hero essence, then turns the castle throne room into a giant machine. After Joe loses his powers, Jasmine and Captain Blue inspire him to recover his hero‑ness and defeat her. The queen is finally unmasked as Junko, the siblings’ late mother, who used the ordeal to teach them to follow their dreams before disappearing, leaving Joe and Jasmine ready for the next threat.
