Summary

Thor: God of Thunder on the Nintendo DS reimagines the Marvel hero as a classic 2D side‑scrolling brawler, wrapping the comic‑book aesthetic around a handheld experience. The game leans heavily into stylized graphics that echo the panels of a graphic novel while letting players swing Mjölnir for melee chops, crack lightning bolts at range, and unleash screen‑clearing special attacks.

Using the DS’s dual screens, you traverse the Nine Realms in tightly designed platforming stages, each filled with enemies that demand both timing and the right thunderous move. The streamlined combat and level design strip away the console’s 3D ambitions, delivering a focused action loop that feels right at home on the portable.

Critics noted the art direction as a high point and gave this version slightly higher scores than its console siblings, though overall reactions on Metacritic remained mixed. For anyone craving a quick, comic‑styled blast of Thor’s might on the go, the DS title stands out as a surprisingly solid reinterpretation.

Storyline

The game begins in medias res with Asgard under attack by the frost‑giant Jötun. Thor is training with Sif and his brother Loki when the invasion erupts. Loki rushes to Odin while Thor frees a frozen Sif and defends Odin’s castle. The assault is halted but Sif is mortally wounded, and Odin denies Thor permission to avenge her. Defying his father, Thor sets out for Niflheim, guided by a clone of Loki who is later revealed as the true mastermind.

In Niflheim Thor battles Ymir, defeats him in the Cave of Ages and unintentionally awakens the metallic beast Mangog. Loki redirects Thor to Vanaheim, where the troll lord Ulik has delayed his return in exchange for repairing the Frostgrinder. While Mangog ravages Asgard, Loki’s attempt to imprison it with the Casket of Eternal Winter fails, and he learns that only the mineral Scabrite can weaken the creature. Scabrite is found in Muspelheim, so Thor confronts Surtur, claims the Twilight Sword and shatters it, channeling its Scabrite‑filled energy into Mjolnir. Armed with the empowered hammer, Thor heads back to Asgard.

Back in Asgard Thor assists Heimdall and a recovered Sif in retaking the Bifrost observatory. He then joins forces with Loki and a weakened Odin to battle Mangog in a final showdown. After a hard‑fought victory Thor apologizes, and Odin releases the trapped Vanir souls, ending the story of Thor: God of Thunder.
