Summary
When I first saw Tales of the Tempest on the DS, I was impressed by how the series folded its classic Linear Motion Battle System into a handheld format. The 3‑on‑3 real‑time combat lets you shift among three movement planes, and the touchscreen adds a layer of special attacks that feel fresh for a Tales title. A quirky twist is the ability for certain characters to transform into werewolves, trading speed and raw power for a loss of technique options.
The game leans heavily on the DS’s dual screens: one displays detailed 3D environments while the other handles menus, cooking, and item use with taps and drags. A day‑night cycle influences enemy strength and the accessibility of towns, meaning you might need to wait for darkness to hunt rare loot. Multiplayer unlocks a co‑op dungeon where up to three friends share loot but not experience, encouraging cooperation without hurting your solo progress.
Even though it launched only in Japan, Tempest manages to compress a full‑blown Tales experience—customizable combat, cooking, and a sprinkle of voice‑acted ability cues—into a portable package that feels surprisingly robust.
Storyline
Tales of the Tempest on the DS follows Caius Qualls, a half‑human Leymon whose guardian and parents are seized by the church. After a Spot attacks his village, Caius learns his foster father is a Lycanth and the villagers turn against them. He teams up with Rubia Natwick, whose priest parents were killed by inquisitor Rommy; Tilkis Barone, a sword‑wielding scholar; Forest Ledoyen, a friendly Lycanth guide; and Arria Ekberg, a priest‑mage who opposes the persecution.
Together they travel across the continent of Areulla, a world scarred by the ancient Beast War that pitted humans against the technologically advanced Leymons. The war’s aftermath left humanity dominant and the remaining Leymons labeled “Lycanths,” hunted for bounties by hunters like Lukius Bridges and his Spot ally Rommy. The party uncovers the truth behind the forged gem called the Patient and the failed Law of Life, which once tried to unify the races but instead caused massive loss of Leymon life.
Their quest pits them against the Black Knights led by Albert Mueller, the child‑bodied Spot king Areulla VIII, and the church’s ruthless hierarchy. By confronting these forces, Caius and his companions aim to free the captured priests, expose the church’s lies, and restore a chance for coexistence between humans and Leymons.
