Summary
Star Fox Command lets you map out whole missions with a simple stylus swipe, turning the DS into a miniature war room. In the overworld map you command up to four Arwings, drawing flight paths while trying to keep enemy ships from reaching the Great Fox – a surprisingly deep turn‑based segment that feels more like a puzzle than a typical rail shooter.
When your routes cross enemy fire, the game shifts into an all‑range battle mode reminiscent of Star Fox 64’s free‑roaming fights, but without the fixed‑track restrictions of earlier titles. You can take on bases, collect cores or blast a flagship, and the whole sequence loops back to the map for the next tactical decision.
The DS’s wireless prowess shines in dogfighting 8‑player local matches or up to four strangers online via Nintendo Wi‑Fi Connection. Scores are earned by snatching stars from destroyed opponents, and a letter‑based ranking system tracks your progress from Z to A.
Behind the scenes, Q‑Games and Nintendo teamed up with Dylan Cuthbert at the helm, channeling concepts from the unreleased Star Fox 2. Miyamoto championed the free‑range design, while the soundtrack stays true to series roots thanks to composer Hajima Wakai. Even the garbled Lylat speech can be replaced by your own voice, recorded straight into the DS mic.
Storyline
Star Fox Command takes place a few years after Star Fox Assault, with Fox McCloud battling the aquatic Anglar empire that lives beneath Venom’s acidic seas. The Lylat System map mirrors Star Fox 64’s layout, revisiting most of its planets while omitting Fortuna, Macbeth and Zoness.
The game boasts the biggest roster in the series—fourteen playable characters—including the core Star Fox team (Fox, Falco, Krystal, Slippy, Peppy), Star Wolf members (Wolf, Panther, Leon), supporting faces like Bill Grey and Katt Monroe, James McCloud, and newcomers Amanda, Lucy and Dash Bowman.
After the Aparoid’s self‑destruction the Star Fox squad has disbanded: Peppy now commands the Cornerian army, Falco works as a mercenary, Slippy is engaged to Amanda, and Krystal has defected to Star Wolf. While patrolling with ROB‑64, Fox learns the Anglars—bio‑engineered by Andross—are invading Corneria. Players choose dialogue options that branch the mission order, affect which characters appear, and lead to nine possible endings, ranging from Amanda joining the team to Fox and Krystal’s son Marcus founding a new Star Fox crew.
