Summary
SpongeBob SquarePants: Plankton’s Robotic Revenge drops you into a chaotic Bikini Bottom where Plankton’s army of robots has razed the Krusty Krab and snatched the safe holding the Krabby Patty formula. You can jump into the shoes of SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward or Mr. Krabs and swap between them at will, exploring familiar locales like Rock Bottom and the mysterious Dutchman’s Triangle while hunting hidden keys.
The DS edition launched in North America on October 22, 2013, marking Activision’s first foray into the SpongeBob license after THQ’s liquidation earlier that year. That shift brought a new publisher’s take on the franchise, though the core premise remains a simple platform‑run adventure.
Critics were largely unkind, calling the game boring and repetitive; IGN scored it just 3.5/10 and multiple outlets hovered around the middle of the scale. The lone bright spot came from GamingBolt, which awarded a 7/10, suggesting it might still amuse younger fans. It’s a single‑player experience that leans heavily on nostalgic settings more than inventive gameplay.
Storyline
A cargo ship accidentally drops a shipment of batteries into the ocean, and Plankton scavenges them to power his giant robot and an army of smaller bots. He also steals the safe that holds the Krabby Patty secret formula, along with the map and two copies of the key that open it.
SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy and the gang chase him across Bikini Bottom, battling his robot minions and two of his relatives—Rainchild and Clem—who each pilot their own massive robots. They collect the scattered batteries and locate the three hidden keys, fighting in places like Dutchman’s Triangle before returning to the Krusty Krab for a showdown.
After defeating Plankton at the Krusty Krab, they recover the final battery and discover the last key under the doormat, opening the safe to find only a note that the formula has been in Mr. Krabs’s pocket the whole time. Squidward laments the wild adventure, and later it’s revealed the rescued batteries are secretly powering Patrick’s TV.
