Summary
SpongeBob's Boating Bash arrived on the Nintendo DS as a faithful port of its Wii counterpart, but with a handful of handheld‑specific tweaks. Squidward Tentacles becomes an unlockable racer, while Mrs. Puff is omitted and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are fully playable. DSi owners even get exclusive content that doesn’t appear on the original console version.
Developed by Impulse Games and published alongside Firebrand Games’ DS effort, this title marked the first SpongeBob racing experience since Nicktoons Winners Cup Racing. The game packs over a hundred boat‑customization options, letting players fine‑tune everything from hull paint to propeller upgrades.
Up to four friends can join the mayhem, turning each heat into a miniature demolition derby despite its racing label. The chaotic crashes and power‑up fireworks capture the cartoon’s slapstick spirit better than any conventional lap race could.
Storyline
At Mrs. Puff's Boating School, SpongeBob flunks the year‑end driving test and sits dejected on the entrance steps. A shady shark named Seymour Scales rolls up in a bus, luring the sponge into his D.R.I.V.E. program—Destruction, Recklessness, Impairment, Velocity, Escape. As SpongeBob progresses, he convinces more of his friends to enroll, tackling increasingly wild challenges.
After surviving the final exams, SpongeBob finally receives a boating licence—only to learn from Mrs. Puff that it’s a fake. He spots Seymour fleeing in a truck, realizing the whole scheme was a scam. The showdown erupts in a chaotic vehicle battle where SpongeBob ultimately triumphs.
With the scam exposed, Seymour ends up behind bars, and SpongeBob decides to return to Mrs. Puff's Boating School next year, ready for another round of reckless fun in SpongeBob's Boating Bash.
