Summary
Spider‑Man: Shattered Dimensions for the Nintendo DS delivers a side‑scrolling brawler that feels like a metroidvania adventure. Players jump between three Spider‑Man variants—Amazing, Noir, and 2099—each rendered in its own visual style, from bright cel‑shaded colors to gritty noir tones and sleek futuristic hues. The touch screen powers a mini‑game allowing Spider‑Man to manipulate the Tablet of Order and Chaos between levels.
Combat blends standard combos with unlockable moves, and every boss is faced twice, the second showdown featuring Tablet‑granted upgrades. The DS roster of villains includes Electro, the Tinkerer, Boomerang, Calypso, Vulture and Silvermane, all voiced by familiar talent that critics praised.
Metacritic scores the version at 73/100, noting the striking graphics, solid 2.5‑D level design and strong voice work, while pointing out its brief length and lack of open‑world freedom. The game’s multiverse crossover concept later helped shape later Spider‑Man comic events and the animated film Spider‑Man: Into the Spider‑Verse.
Storyline
In Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions the Tablet of Order and Chaos is shattered on Earth‑10955 when the Amazing Spider‑Man tries to stop Mysterio. The broken tablet scatters across several realities, prompting Madame Web to gather four Spider‑Men – the Amazing Spider‑Man, Spider‑Man Noir, Spider‑Man 2099 and Ultimate Spider‑Man – to retrieve the fragments and keep their power from villains.
Each hero claims a first fragment easily, but the second pieces are already in the hands of foes. Kraven the Hunter traps the Amazing Spider‑Man, Hammerhead has fused guns to his arms for Noir, Hobgoblin boosts his psy‑powers against 2099, and Electro grows massive for Ultimate Spider‑Man. After defeating those enemies the team pursues the remaining fragments, facing Sandman, the Vulture, Scorpion’s half‑brother Kron, and a Deadpool‑run reality‑TV challenge that ends with Deadpool cloning himself.
When the fragments are finally assembled, Mysterio absorbs the Tablet, becomes god‑like and tears the boundaries between dimensions. Madame Web summons the four Spider‑Men for a final joint battle; they separate Mysterio from the Tablet and restore the multiverse. The heroes return to their own worlds while the Amazing Spider‑Man puts Mysterio behind bars, and a post‑credits cameo shows Spider‑Ham arriving too late.
