Summary

Soul Bubbles lets you step into the sandals of a young shaman apprentice charged with rescuing wayward spirits. Using the DS touch screen you blow and shape bubbles with stylus strokes, guiding the fragile souls through winds, spikes, fire and watery currents. Animal masks let you split, merge or pop bubbles on demand, turning each hazard into a puzzle mechanic.

Collecting glittering stardust raises your end‑of‑level score, while hidden calabash unlock new chapters for even tougher trials. The game’s atmosphere feels oddly serene, a calm counterpoint to its demanding reflexes.

Critics responded enthusiastically, awarding it 78 / 100 on Metacritic and scores in the high‑seven to mid‑eights from Edge, Eurogamer and IGN. N‑Europe praised it as “wonderfully calming,” and it earned nominations for Best Puzzle Game and Most Innovative Design at the IGN DS awards, as well as nods from the Game Developers Choice and BAFTA.

Initially sold only through Toys “R” Us in North America and later offered as a DS Download Service demo, the title became a hidden gem, ranking #1 on Gamasutra’s 2008 overlooked games list.

Storyline

In Soul Bubbles, you step into the role of a young shaman apprentice tasked with looking after wandering souls. Your main job is to craft protective bubbles that keep the spirits safe as you guide them through each stage. The objective of every level is to move all the souls to the Gateway Cube, where they can finally rest forever. While doing so you also gather stardust and the mysterious Calabash items.

The adventure is divided into eight worlds and a total of 40 levels, each offering its own challenges and layouts. Bubbles must be carefully sized and positioned to shield the fragile spirits from hazards. Collecting stardust and Calabash not only boosts your score but also helps you unlock new abilities. The blend of puzzle‑solving and gentle caretaking gives the game a soothing yet engaging rhythm.
