Summary
Sonic Rush stretches the DS’s two screens into a single, seamless course, letting the player dash and flip between them in true 2.5‑D fashion. The combination of flat 2‑D lanes with 3‑D models keeps the eye glued to the action.
Choosing between Sonic’s classic speed and Blaze’s flame‑based glide adds strategic depth, while rings double as health and a point‑scoring buffer. A Tension Gauge fills as tricks are pulled or enemies are smashed, feeding speed boosts that feel almost frantic.
The stylus pops up in special stages that borrow the iconic swirl of Sonic 2, turning the pen into a high‑velocity spinner. A grading system ranks runs on time, rewarding replay, and a two‑player split‑screen race lets friends compete on any unlocked level.
Hideki Naganuma, fresh from Jet Set Radio, crafted a soundtrack full of bright, sampled beats; even the final boss theme sneaks a clip from Malcolm X’s speech, proving the DS’s tiny sound chip can still deliver punch.
Critics praised the game’s vibrant graphics and nostalgic gameplay loop, though some complained the pace could blur details. Still, it hit the UK Platinum sales mark and ranked among the best DS titles on several “top‑list” round‑ups.
Storyline
Sonic Rush kicks off when Blaze the Cat, a princess from a parallel world, is ripped into Sonic’s dimension. Her realm depends on seven Sol Emeralds, but Doctor Eggman has stolen them, prompting Blaze to hunt the gems herself. She soon bumps into Cream the Rabbit and her friend Cheese, who invite her for tea and try to steer her toward Sonic, though Blaze insists on handling the crisis alone.
Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails are chasing the Chaos Emeralds, also taken by Eggman’s alternate self, Eggman Nega. The two Eggmen are secretly working together to drain both the Sol and Chaos Emeralds for a massive Egg Salamander weapon. As the dimensions begin to merge and destabilize, Sonic confronts Blaze, and after a brief clash she realizes she can’t save her world solo.
With the power of friendship, Blaze, Sonic, and their friends restore the Sol Emeralds, transform into Super Sonic and Burning Blaze, and destroy the Egg Salamander. The worlds are saved, Blaze returns home wiser, and promises to visit again.
