Summary

Sonic Colors on the Nintendo DS captures the series’ trademark speed while layering it with a bright, amusement‑park aesthetic that feels fresh on a handheld. The game’s standout mechanic is the integration of Wisps—colorful alien beings that grant Sonic temporary abilities ranging from rocket‑boosted flight to electrified attacks—letting players swap powers on the fly for creative navigation.

Each zone is built around a distinct park attraction, from roller‑coaster loops to neon‑lit midway games, and the level layouts encourage both rapid runs and exploratory detours to uncover hidden Wisps. The dual‑screen setup showcases the vibrant environments on the top while the bottom screen provides a handy map and quick‑access Wisp selection, keeping the action fluid without pausing.

What keeps me coming back is the blend of speed‑focused routes and the strategic choice of which Wisp to deploy, rewarding both reckless dashing and thoughtful planning. The crisp sprite work and catchy soundtrack round out a portable experience that feels both nostalgic and uniquely colorful.

Storyline

In Sonic Colors DS, Dr. Eggman opens a massive space amusement park called Dr. Eggman's Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park, claiming he’s turned over a new leaf. Sonic and Tails investigate and meet Yacker, a Wisps alien, after Tails builds a translator. They discover Eggman has enslaved other Wisps to power a mind‑control laser aimed at Earth.

Sonic travels across the park’s planet‑sized attractions, freeing Wisps and shutting down the generators while bumping into friends who are also trying to thwart Eggman. When Eggman attempts to fire the cannon, a wreckage glitch causes it to fail and the park begins to explode. Eggman then uses the corrupted Nega‑Wisps to power a final robot that draws on the powers of every rescued Wisp.

The machine weakens, the Wisps escape, and Sonic defeats Eggman, sending him drifting into space. After the explosion, Yacker thanks the heroes, but they soon learn the Mother Wisp has become the Nega‑Mother Wisp. Using the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic becomes Super Sonic, defeats the corrupted Mother Wisp, and restores her to normal. In a post‑credits scene, Eggman is stranded in space with Orbot and Cubot.
