Summary
Soma Bringer is a rare DS action‑RPG that puts you in a top‑down world where real‑time attacks flow from the DS face buttons. Combos are built by chaining standard strikes, special moves and Breaks—stunning foes when you press hard enough. Health tops up automatically as you wander, so the pacing feels continuous rather than pause‑and‑plan.
You start with seven diverse characters and unlock an eighth later, each fitting into one of six combat archetypes—Battlers, Dark, Gunners, Kanbus, Koas or Somas. The AI drives two partners while a third slot can be filled by a friend via wireless, turning dungeons into a true cooperative hack‑and‑slash. Experience gains, level‑up stat points and weapon upgrades keep growth rewarding without excessive micromanagement.
Behind the scenes, Monolith Soft’s veteran crew—producer Tetsuya Takahashi, scenario writer Soraya Saga, director Shingo Kawabata—shaped the title’s atmosphere, while Yasunori Mitsuda’s soundtrack adds a lush, electronic feel despite the DS’s limits.
Storyline
Soma Bringer takes place on the continent of Barnea, where life draws power from the mystical Soma that fills the air and forms a planetary Soma Ring. Corrupted beasts called Visitors begin ravaging human settlements, prompting the Secundady‑run military Pharzuph to respond.¶The narrative follows Pharzuph Division 7, dispatched to investigate the surge of Visitor attacks. They are joined by Idea, an amnesiac girl with extraordinary Soma sensitivity, assigned by the enigmatic Master Laban.¶Division 7 later clashes with the Unbras, a faction led by Adonis who hunts the Master Cages—devices that condense Soma and tie back to the alien consciousness Arethia. The story reveals that Arethia gifted Soma to humanity, was betrayed, and its fragmented mind now haunts the Ring, spawning Visitors.¶Welt, a Division 7 member, is contacted by Orpheus, the true avatar of Arethia, urging a halt to both Laban’s and Adonis’s plans. The team reaches the Ring Tower, defeats the corrupted Arethia incarnation, and, with Orpheus’s help, stabilises the Soma flow. Idea, Adonis, and Orpheus then merge back into the Arethia collective, pacifying the Visitors.
