After the breakup, Nina learns that her geologist father Vladimir has been summoned to investigate the surge of natural catastrophes. A televangelist, Pat Shelton, heads the European cult Puritas Cordis, preaching that only the pure‑hearted will survive the coming apocalypse. Meanwhile, a vicar named Matthew discovers a coded parchment about the 17th‑century prophet Zandona and is killed before he can hand it to Bishop Parrey, who in turn entrusts it to cipher expert Professor William Patterson – who is also murdered.

When Nina boards the cruise ship Calypso, she finds Patterson’s suitcase and a 1681 letter from Sister Elise, a nun who wrote of Zandona’s prophecies and a "key" hidden in the ruins of Gatineau.
