Summary

Saikin Koi Shiteru? is a charming otome title for the Nintendo DS that feels like a love‑letter to fans of romantic visual novels. The game shipped in both a standard version and a limited‑edition bundle that included a collectible case‑wrapped booklet, letting collectors get a deeper glimpse into the world. What really caught my ear was the roster of well‑known voice talent—Motoko Kumai, Megumi Toyoguchi, Norio Wakamoto and others lend their distinctive performances to a cast that includes a conflicted swordsman, a mysterious rock‑star, and an earnest medical intern. With a CERO B rating it’s aimed at a teenage audience, yet its bittersweet storytelling is surprisingly sophisticated. An official guidebook released later that year rounds out the experience with character bios and artwork, making Saikin Koi Shiteru? a nostalgic treat for anyone who appreciates the DS era’s niche romance gems.

Storyline

In Saikin Koi Shiteru? the player controls a 17‑year‑old heroine who can choose her own name. She enrolls at Seiran Academy and, on her first day, slips into a deep pool that sits right at the school’s entrance. Inside the water she encounters strange, floating mitochondria‑like organisms that nobody else can see. She dubs these creatures "Saikin"—a nod to bacteria—and discovers they can influence the emotions of anyone they touch. Throughout the game she uses the Saikin to subtly shift the feelings of classmates and teachers, hoping to improve their lives while navigating the quirky mysteries of the academy.
