Summary
Radiant Historia hands you a mysterious tome called the White Chronicle, which lets you hop between branching timelines on the war‑torn continent of Vainqueur. By revisiting “nodes” you can reap items or information missed in another line, and the choices you make colour‑code the story map in brown, blue, and dark boxes. Battles unfold on a 3 × 3 grid where my three‑person party stays fixed while enemies shift, letting us stack combo attacks or push foes into traps; a later cloaking skill even lets us slip past random encounters.
The combat feels tactical yet quick, with actions queued and resolved simultaneously, a “Change” mechanic that swaps queue order, and an optional auto‑battle for grinding. The game’s development was a joint effort between Atlus and Headlock; many staff previously worked on titles like Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and they called it their toughest DS project because the time‑travel system kept throwing logic puzzles at them. Yoko Shimomura composed an orchestral‑leaning soundtrack, highlighted by the vocal ending theme “Historia” performed by Haruka Shimotsuki.
Storyline
Radiant Historia unfolds on Vainqueur, a continent split between Alistel and Granorg. The Sand Plague turns living beings to sand, fueling a desperate war.
Alistel’s spy Stocke is wounded during a rescue and drawn into the timeless realm of Historia. There, children Teo and Lippti give him the White Chronicle, a book that lets him jump between moments.
Two paths branch: one keeps Stocke under Heiss, the other sends him with his friend Rosch’s unit. In both lines he meets Beastmen shaman Aht, warrior Gafka, and Granorg princess Eruca, who can perform the ritual to stop desertification.
Stocke discovers Hugo’s secret pact with Granorg and that Heiss wields the Black Chronicle to erase the sacrifice’s suffering. The ritual needs a royal soul; Eruca’s brother Ernst—reborn as Stocke—must die to stabilize Vainqueur’s mana, while Heiss becomes the monster Apocrypha.
The normal ending has Stocke accept the sacrifice, delaying the Sand Plague. Completing every side quest unlocks the true ending, where Heiss volunteers to die, letting Stocke live and the world begin to rebuild.
